The STOPP technique

The video by innerAssist Psychological services introduces the STOPP technique, a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) tool that can help people manage their negative thoughts and emotions. The acronym STOPP stands for Stop, Take a breath, Observe, Pull back, and Practice what works.

Learn the STOPP skill:

Stop: Pause and take a step back. Take a breath: take a deep breath, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth. Observe: Observe your thoughts and reactions. Ask yourself: what am I thinking? What am I feeling? What am I reacting to? Pull Back: Take a helicopter view and try to see things from a different perspective. Is there another way of looking at my situation? Proceed, do what will help most: what are the options, what is the best thing to do?
